Giving Tuesday is on November 27

Do you enjoy Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales? After you treat yourself, you can treat others too.

Happening on November 27 (next Tuesday), JF&CS will be participating in an online one-day only fundraising campaign called Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday is an online giving campaign promoted after (American) Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday in an effort to encourage philanthropic giving after people enjoy a weekend of self-indulgence.

We are very excited to announce our matching gift opportunity! On November 27th and all year round, all new gifts of $150+ to the JF&CS Annual Campaign will be MATCHED by the 150th Leadership Fund! The 150th Leadership Fund will match 50 cents for every dollar donated, turning your $20 donation into $30 worth of impact!

Keep an eye out for next week’s Giving Tuesday e-mail in your inbox!

In her own words...

Mira* immigrated to Canada with her husband and two young children. When she came to JF&CS, she was separated from her husband but living with her two children in an apartment where her abusive husband was the superintendent of the building. This put Mira and her children in a very precarious and unsafe position.

Not only did he have access to her unit, but he also had the opportunity to berate and abuse her on a daily basis. She couldn’t afford to move and was scared because of the poor credit and minimal funds her husband left her with. Eventually, she found the courage to take her children and moved in with her cousin as a temporary solution.

Mira met with a JF&CS social worker and explained her situation. She wanted to provide a safe environment for her children and she wanted to put an end to the abuse. Her social worker helped her apply for special priority housing and was quickly offered an apartment unit that was safe and clean. Mira received financial assistance to buy all of the necessary essentials to get her and her children set up in their home.

Now, Mira feels safe. She no longer has the stress of worrying whether she will see her ex-husband in the elevator, halls, underground parking or the laundry room. To her, that is worth everything. Because of the help JF&CS provided, Mira and her children are now living in a safe home free from the constant daily abuse.

 Volunteering with JF&CS
Chaplaincy
Make a difference in someone's life by providing support, companionship and friendship by visiting Jewish residents at hospitals and long-term care homes. JF&CS is looking for Chaplaincy Volunteers who are available 1 hour per week for a minimum of 6 months. For more information, please call 416-638-7800 x 6287.

Homework Club
JF&CS wants to ensure that every student has an equal opportunity. Children and teens often need extra help in certain subjects, and hiring a tutor can be a prohibitive cost for many families. That's why we offer The Homework Club to students in Grade 4 and higher. We are currently in need of volunteer tutors to assist our students. For more information, please call 416-638-7800 x 6266.
