Adding an extra Mitzvah to the celebration

Jacqui Miller, a 12 year old student at Associated Hebrew School, celebrated her Bat Mitzvah on February 3rd at Beth Sholom Synagogue with her family and friends. To mark this momentous occasion, Jacqui wanted to do something that would make a difference.

Jacqui spent a long time considering various mitzvah projects and decided to donate something related to camp. She strongly believes that every child should have the opportunity to go to camp and to attend camp with the necessary supplies as well as other fun items.

Thank you Jacqui for donating enough camp supplies for 20 campers! Your gift will help children feel part of the camp community and will enhance their camping experience. Click here to learn more about donating simcha baskets.

Making a difference as a Big Brother

JF&CS volunteers play an integral part in the success of our Agency. We are extremely grateful to those who give their time and expertise to assist our clients in a myriad of ways.

Ben has been volunteering as a Big Brother since 2016. He acts as a role model to a young Jewish child by providing support, companionship and friendship. Twice a month, Ben and his little brother meet up to enjoy a fun activity, grab a meal, talk or just hang out.

“As a “Big Brother”, the part I play at JF&CS is small, but it never feels that way. The staff work hard to ensure volunteers make meaningful contributions to help our community’s most vulnerable.” – Ben Singer

Always There: 150 years of JF&CS

Jewish Family & Child proudly presents a gala in honour of our 150th anniversary.

Join us on May 9th for an evening of delicious food, great company and an interactive exhibit where you will be invited to walk through the decades and experience Jewish life in Toronto since 1868.

The experience does not end here; after much demand we will be reviving Jewish Folks Telling Jokes as part of the evening’s entertainment. Guests will also enjoy the sounds of the Toronto Jewish Choir. An event not to be missed.

A Passover message from Rabbi Mordechai Chemel

Most of us know that Passover commemorates the freedom of the Jewish people from slavery in ancient Egypt. Did you know, however, that Passover is not just a commemoration of a historic event?

The Torah teaches us that G-d blesses us every Passover with a special energy that helps us to free ourselves from our own personal Egypt. During these days we can more easily break free from the various boundaries and limitations that hold us captive in our own lives. The Festival of Matzah is an auspicious time to escape from the worries, habits, addictions and self-defeating behaviours that prevent us from living life to its full potential.

So this Passover let us resolve to throw off the shackles of dysfunction in our family relationships. Let us honor and respect one another. Let us find ways to look less at our smartphones and more at those who are counting on us for help. Let us come together at the Seder table and celebrate the many things that unite us.

On behalf of Jewish Family & Child's Chaplaincy Services I wish you a very happy, successful and redemptive Passover.

Rabbi Mordechai Chemel, MSW, RSW
Manager, Chaplaincy Services
