HELP CUT THE THREADS OF POVERTY

Jewish people living in poverty look no different than you or I.  They attend our schools and our summer camps, pray in our synagogues, and participate in community activities. They are new immigrants trying to make a fresh start; Holocaust survivors and other seniors; single parent families; and like many of us, they often struggle with mental and/or physical illness.

JF&CS is committed to reducing the effects of poverty in our vibrant and caring Jewish community, but we cannot do it without you.  As a community, we have an obligation to strengthen our efforts on behalf of those who need us the most. Our goal is to engage community members like you in our fight against poverty. Make your voice heard by supporting JF&CS’ poverty reduction efforts today. Help cut the threads of poverty in our community with a gift to Jewish Family & Child.

A NIGHT FILLED WITH LAUGHS

On May 25, JF&CS Emerging Leaders hosted their annual event, Cringe Worthy, raising a record-breaking $37,000. Money raised at Cringe Worthy will benefit the High Achievers Scholarship Fund which helps disadvantaged young adults pursue post-secondary education. Former foster children or youth from low-income families will receive financial assistance to cover the cost of tuition, textbooks and computers.

More than 275 guests enjoyed a night filled with hilarious and embarrassing stories shared live on stage at The Opera House. Over the past three years, Cringe Worthy has raised over $75,000 for JF&CS programs, including our camp subsidy program, Levelling The Playing Field and scholarships.

Emerging Leaders was established in February 2014 by a group of young professionals in their 20s and 30s. The members of this dynamic group have varying professions and backgrounds but all share a passion for making a difference in the community through the work of Jewish Family & Child.View pictures from this exciting event on the JF&CS Emerging Leaders Facebook page

JF&CS CELEBRATES PRIDE MONTH

JF&CS is proud to celebrate Pride Month 2017!  Throughout the month our programs will include small celebrations.  At the Youth in Care and Adoption BBQ on May 23 guests were invited to decorate delicious  rainbow cookies.  Later in the month the Family Resource Centre is going to be hosting an important discussion about toys and gender.  These are just two of the great activities that are going to be happening throughout the month.

As an agency we will be celebrating at an upcoming staff meeting and everything will culminate on June 25th when we will be marching in Toronto’s Pride Parade. We are proud to show our community that we are an open and safe agency and ready to support the Jewish LGBTQ+ Community.

WHEN COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER

JF&CS sends over 300 kids to Jewish day and overnight camps every year; an experience that they otherwise could not afford. However, getting to camp is only part of the battle. Once at camp, kids need items like duffel bags, towels, water bottles, sunscreen and more to help make their time there the best it can be.

This year, thanks to two amazing community leaders Daniella Samuel and Jasmine Eliav, the children who attend camp through JF&CS’s camp subsidy program will be able to share in all that camp has to offer without worrying if their packed bags are lighter or emptier than their peers.

With the support of friends and community members, Daniella and Jasmine crowd-sourced donations which were then used to purchase camp gear at a discounted rate. Thanks to community partners like this, who raise funds and open doors, JF&CS is able to access quality resources for our clients.

From the over 300 children attending camp this year, we say thank you to Daniella, Jasmine, and everyone who contributed to their initiative!

WALK WITH ISRAEL

On May 22nd, Toronto’s Jewish community joined together to walk and show their solidarity with the people of Israel in UJA’s 48th annual Walk with Israel. JF&CS staff, volunteers and friends from other Jewish agencies united to oversee Rest Station #4, where we cheered on and handed out popsicles to the walk participants. The close to 20,000 strong walkers and runners transformed downtown Toronto into a veritable sea of blue and white. As always, the event was a huge success and a fantastic time was had by all.
