Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis

As the humanitarian crisis continues to unfold in Ukraine, JF&CS would like to take a moment to extend our thoughts and prayers to anyone with loved ones directly affected by the conflict.

Already, the strength of the agency has revealed itself as we have begun working to support people in our community. For many Holocaust Survivors, the war has triggered memories of past violence, fear, and helplessness. Our Holocaust Survivor Services Social Workers have stepped up to support Survivors and to offer healthy coping strategies.

In addition to offering support for our clients, we have compiled a list of various agencies, crisis hotlines, and other helpful avenues for support in an effort to provide further assistance to the community.

 Honouring Our Dedicated Volunteers

Alessandra Orellana

Diane Grevler

Harold Rosenfeld

We are pleased to announce that three of our wonderful JF&CS volunteers have been nominated for the 2021 Ontario Volunteer Service Awards! These individuals are extraordinarily dedicated and have been generously donating their time and efforts to various agency programs for several years.

The Ontario Volunteer Service Awards honours volunteers who have provided committed and dedicated service to an organization. Individuals are recognized by the length of time they have volunteered with one organization, ranging from five to sixty-five years of continuous service.

About our volunteers:

Alessandra Orellana has been an extremely dedicated, creative, and fun JF&CS Direct Service Volunteer and Big Sister for the past five years.
"What originally was a volunteer role has turned into a lifelong friendship and bond. Being a Big Sister is truly an honour, and I am so grateful to have been paired with such a wonderful young lady."

Diane Grevler has been a committed JF&CS Direct Service Volunteer at the Family Resource Centre (FRC) for the past five years. She volunteers her time tutoring children and youth at the FRC Homework Club and currently works with adults and seniors in conversational English at the FRC Conversation Café program.
"As an immigrant myself, I wanted to give back to my community in gratitude for the wonderful life I've enjoyed in this amazing country," Diane says. "When I retired, teaching ESL seemed like a natural extension of my 40+ years as an educator."

Harold Rosenfeld has devoted his time to being a JF&CS Direct Service Volunteer for the past five years. He volunteers at the FRC Conversation Café program and assists with registration, seating, and socializing with our Café Europa's Holocaust Survivors. In addition to his program contributions, Harold is also on the JF&CS Board of Directors.
"In addition to volunteering with the Café Europa program and the FRC's Conversation Café, I am also a member on the Programs, Services and Outcomes Committee, and I am honoured to be a member of the board of JF&CS. Being able to personally see the dedication and passion of the staff at JF&CS and how quickly they have been able to adapt to supporting their clients during COVID makes me proud to be part of this great agency."

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to our three recognized volunteers and show our appreciation for all of their hard work and enthusiasm!

Jewish Disability Awareness, Acceptance and Inclusion Month (JDAIM)

During the month of February, JF&CS honoured Jewish Disability Awareness, Acceptance and Inclusion Month (JDAIM) by sharing tips and helpful resources that encourage and embrace accessibility for all individuals throughout the month.

Thanks to the JDAIM Subcommittee of our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, resources have been made available to staff at the agency to help support their work with clients with disabilities. These resources have also been posted on our social media accounts to extend this learning and awareness to throughout the community.
